Beijing, the capital of the people's
Republic of China, is the political, economic, scientific and
cultural centre of the country.
Archaeological discoveries have shown that Peking Man, a primitive
caveman, lived in the Zhoukoudian area, on the southwestern
outskirts of Beijing, about 500,000 years ago. During the Western
Zhou dynasty (11th century - 711 B.C.), a small market town
called Ji appeared in where Beijing stands today and became
the capital of the State of Yan. It was the second capital of
the Liao dynasty (916-1125), and the capital of the Jin (1115-1234),
Yuan (1271-1368), Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties.
Being an ancient city with a long history, which has been the
country's capital for about a thousand years, Beijing boasts
many cultural relics and places of historic interest.
Since the founding of New China on October 1, 1949, Beijing
has been ttransformed into a thriving new metropolis of the
country.
