Situated in the northeastern part
of the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous Region, Guilin has been a famous
scenic spot in the country since ancient times. The lofty hills,
limpid waters, fantastic caves and wonderful rocks have attracted
numberless tourists through the centuries.
The Lijiang River, Guilin's main waterway, winds like a jade
belt through the city and flows south among steep hills. Yangshuo
is reputed to have the most beautiful scenery of all Guilin.

As Han Yu, a famous poet of the Tangdynasty, described in the
poem about Guilin, "The river forms a green gauze belt,
the mountains look like blue jade hairpins."
Guilin is also a city with a history of over 2,000 years. As
early as 214 B.C., the First Emperor of the Qin dynasty established
Guilin Prefecture. The city is rich in historical relics. There
are ancient engravings and inscriptions on the the cliffs in
many caves. |
